English as a Second Language (ESL)

International School of Languages offers a wide array of courses and levels tailored to your current proficiency and mastery of the English language:

Introductory: 12 weeks (20 hours per week)
This program is a basic grammar, reading and writing course for non-native speakers of English. Grammar and syntax of written discourse is recognized and identified in sentences and short passages, practiced in oral and written activities, and used and edited in a variety of written formats. The course provides students the opportunity to work on an individualized basis with software and web-based materials previously assigned by the instructor.

Elementary 1: 12 weeks (20 hours per week)
Students who already have limited command of the English language build upon their vocabulary and begin to eliminate errors through the study of basic grammar, readings, guided discussions, and written and oral exercises. The course also provides students the opportunity to work on an individualized basis with software and web-based materials previously assigned by the instructor.

Elementary 2: 12 weeks (20 hours per week)
This course develops basic listening comprehension and speaking skills and furthers understanding of American culture at a high beginning level. The content facilitates acquisition of listening and speaking skills. Students will be provided with listening materials, interactive software, and conversation and pronunciation workshops.

Intermediate 1: 12 weeks (20 hours per week)
Students will prepare for academic course work through the study of grammar, sentence structure, paragraph organization and pre-writing techniques and will respond to college level readings in guided discussions, oral presentations and paragraph length essays.


Intermediate 2: 12 weeks (20 hours per week)
Students will polish their writing skill through grammar reviews, written exercises and the study of sentence structure, rhetoric and essay organization. Students will respond to both the content and technique of college level readings. Students will write essays using description, narration, cause and effect and comparison/contrast.

Advanced 1: 12 weeks (20 hours per week)
This is a content-based writing and reading course for non-native speakers of English Students develop their academic reading and writing skills using academic texts. The program uses computer-assisted grammar and writing practice with lab assistance.

Advanced 2: 12 weeks (20 hours per week)
This second advanced class focuses on writing and reading for non-native speakers of English. Students read and write paragraphs and short essays on academic topics and acquire grammar, writing, and vocabulary skills for college-level academic work. The program uses computer-assisted grammar and writing practice with lab assistance.

TOEFL Preparation: 12 weeks (20 hours per week)
This course is designed to help students improve their scores on the TOEFL by being familiarized with the test and by practicing TOEFL exercises. The majority of the class focuses on the TOEFL with some practice for the TOEFL paper institutional test. Students will follow the directions given on the various sections of TOEFL tests; identify strong and weak areas in their measured English proficiency; and complete TOEFL tasks with improved accuracy.
